What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis, also called UC, is one of two primary types of chronic, inflammatory bowel diseases.

"Chronic" means long-term or long-lasting.

In UC, the inner lining, or mucosa, of the rectum and part, or all, of the colon can be affected by inflammation. Sometimes, this inflammation can cause ulcers—or sores—to form.
